Tonga Triumphs: Set to Host 2031 Pacific Games!

Tonga has been selected to host the 2031 Pacific Games, marking a significant comeback since it withdrew from hosting the 2019 Games. The decision was made during a vote by the Pacific Games Council members in Koror, Palau, where Tonga received 12 votes, surpassing Fiji’s nine.

This will be the first time Tonga has hosted the Pacific Games since the 1989 Pacific Mini Games. The island nation expresses gratitude for the opportunity after a tumultuous history with the Pacific Games Council, which saw Tonga suspended after it canceled the 2019 event, prompting the Games to be relocated to Samoa.

Tonga’s Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni led the delegation at the meeting and highlighted the collective effort that made the successful bid possible. He expressed confidence in Tonga’s capacity to host the event successfully, acknowledging the work ahead.

The atmosphere at the meeting was one of celebration, according to journalist Melielau Manu, who noted the joy expressed by the Tongan delegation upon the announcement of the vote results. The Tongan team, including key figures such as Minister responsible for Sports Lord Vaea and Olympian Pita Taufatofua, showcased strong determination throughout the process.

Despite a robust challenge from Fiji’s delegation, the votes did not favor their bid.
