The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is urged to create a comprehensive business plan to enhance the Flying Fijians’ chances of clinching the Rugby World Cup title. In an interview with FijiNikua magazine, John Sanday, chairman of Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited (FRFUL), emphasized the importance of focusing on established business practices to support the national team’s goals.
Despite limited resources, Sanday noted that the national XV side has succeeded in reaching the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals three times, relying solely on talent, dedication, and a passion for their country. He reflected on his own experience, having been part of the Flying Fijians team that first reached the quarterfinals, highlighting that such achievements are possible with the right foundation.
“Our ultimate ambition is to secure a Rugby World Cup victory,” Sanday stated following the launch of FijiNIKUA’s December edition at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva. He expressed the need to transition from minimal resources to a robust business framework that can lead to success at the World Cup.
To achieve this, Sanday plans to stabilize the FRU’s finances, improve governance, and develop strategies to enhance revenue streams. The formation of sub-committees is also on the agenda, intending to involve capable individuals from outside the organization in specific projects, with announcements expected in early 2025.
Sanday acknowledged the necessity of a rugby players’ association to better advocate for player interests and improve outcomes within the FRU. This association will have a representative on the board, further enhancing communication and collaboration.
Additionally, he mentioned that the board will evaluate the current staff and structural framework of the FRU, ensuring alignment with global standards and developing the skills necessary for Fiji Rugby to reach tier-one status.
This initiative not only reflects a commitment to rugby excellence but also positions Fiji as a strong contender on the world stage. By investing in both infrastructure and the players themselves, the FRU aims to build a sustainable future for rugby in the nation.
In conclusion, Sanday’s vision for the FRU underscores an optimistic outlook for the future of Fiji Rugby, with measurable steps toward achieving their ultimate goal of a World Cup victory.
