The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has issued a final notice to 14,661 tenants who have lease arrears amounting to a considerable $16.7 million. The Board is encouraging tenants to resolve their overdue payments promptly to prevent any potential legal consequences.
Isoa Tuwai, the general manager of Estate Services at TLTB, stressed the necessity of addressing these outstanding payments without delay. Timely payments are essential to ensure that landowners receive their lease payments on time. Tuwai noted the Board’s commitment to working alongside tenants to find resolutions and highlighted the importance of meeting their financial obligations.
“Tenants are reminded of their duty to pay lease rental and administration fees in advance on January 1 and July 1 each year, as outlined in the lease agreement,” he stated. This practice not only helps avoid the risk of legal actions but also enables the Board to distribute lease funds to landowners efficiently.
Tuwai encouraged tenants with arrears to visit TLTB offices to discuss their situations with the arrears recovery teams, mentioning that part payments can be arranged under certain conditions. Tenants who may require financial support were advised to seek assistance from local commercial banks, as TLTB has established arrangements for such cases.
He reiterated the urgent need for tenants to clear their outstanding payments to evade negative consequences, including potential litigation. All inquiries can be directed to the mobile number 990 8959.
In an important notification, TLTB highlighted the impact of unpaid dues on landowners, who rely on lease revenues for their livelihood. The Board warns that, if arrears are not settled by November 30, 2024, tenants’ names may be published in media outlets, and legal actions may be initiated, which could lead to lease cancellations and loss of property.
While the situation is serious, it presents an opportunity for tenants to take proactive measures to resolve their arrears before facing the impending consequences. A cooperative effort between tenants and the TLTB can lead to a more positive outcome for all parties involved.
Summary: The TLTB has alerted 14,661 tenants about $16.7 million in lease arrears, urging them to make payments to avoid legal issues. The Board emphasizes the need for timely payments to support landowners and avoid potential legal actions. Tenants are encouraged to communicate with TLTB for possible solutions, illustrating the importance of accountability and cooperation in resolving these financial matters.
