The streets of Labasa Town burst with energy yesterday as the Washington Tin Band delivered a vibrant performance, marking a festive occasion after the cancellation of the New Year’s street party in the Northern Division. Hailing from Lami Village in Suva, this 13-member band captivated audiences with their lively tunes crafted from empty drums, tins, sticks, and containers, performing outside Dutt’s Shoe World and Chinatown Shops.
Band leader Mosese Ravadra shared that their entertainment tour kicked off earlier in the week in Bua, with plans to spend several days in Labasa visiting local villages before heading to Savusavu and Taveuni by the week’s end. “The purpose of our tour is to wish everyone a happy New Year through our music,” Mr. Ravadra noted, emphasizing that this marks the second consecutive year the band has traveled from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu to spread New Year cheer.
During their engaging performances, the band encourages contributions from spectators by placing a tin among the musicians. “There’s no fixed amount; whatever the generous people of the friendly North bless us with will be used for our children, who have dedicated their time to perform during this tour,” Mr. Ravadra explained. The funds collected are aimed at supporting the band members, particularly students, with back-to-school expenses.
In addition to the lively Labasa performances, Ravadra mentioned that another group of younger band members is performing on the streets of Suva, ensuring that the New Year’s spirit reaches everyone. “Our goal is to include everyone in this celebration and bring joy wherever we go,” he stated.
The Washington Tin Band’s initiative beautifully combines entertainment with community support, highlighting the importance of nurturing local culture while aiding families in need. Their efforts create a meaningful way to kick off the year for communities across the North and beyond.
This initiative not only reinvigorates the festive spirit but also reinforces community ties, reminding us all of the vital role that music plays in nurturing joy and unity. As the new year unfolds, the Washington Tin Band serves as a beacon of positivity, showcasing how shared experiences and collective support can uplift and inspire communities.
