The vibrant streets of Labasa Town were filled with energy yesterday as the Washington Tin Band delivered an exhilarating performance, providing a festive highlight following the absence of a street party for the New Year in the Northern Division.

Hailing from Lami Village in Suva, the 13-member band entertained outside Dutt’s Shoe World and Chinatown Shops with infectious music created from empty drums, tins, sticks, and containers. Band leader Mosese Ravadra mentioned that their entertainment tour kicked off earlier in the week in Bua.

“We are spending a few days in Labasa visiting villages before heading to Savusavu and Taveuni by week’s end,” Mr. Ravadra shared. “The purpose of our tour is to wish everyone a happy new year through our music.”

This marks the second consecutive year that the band has made the journey from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu to spread New Year cheer. During their live performances, the band places a tin among the musicians and a dancer, inviting spectators to contribute generously. Mr. Ravadra clarified that the proceeds would go towards supporting the band members, especially students, with their back-to-school expenses.

“There’s no fixed amount,” he noted. “Whatever the generous people of the friendly North bless us with will be used for our children, who have sacrificed their time to perform during this tour.”

Additionally, Mr. Ravadra shared that a second group of younger band members is performing in Suva, ensuring that the New Year’s spirit reaches everyone. “Our goal is to include everyone in this celebration and bring joy wherever we go,” he explained.

The Washington Tin Band’s initiative beautifully merges entertainment with community support, making their efforts a heartwarming and impactful way to kick off the year for families across the North and beyond.

This story not only showcases the revival of festive spirit through culture and music but also highlights the importance of community support for education and well-being. The Washington Tin Band’s efforts are indeed inspiring, reminding us that joy and unity can be stirred through the rhythm of music, effectively enhancing family and community bonds as the new year unfolds.
