Tightening the Nets: New Measures Against Sea Drug Trafficking

Police have enhanced border security measures, especially in maritime areas, to tackle drug trafficking activities. This was emphasized by Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu during an address at World Maritime Day 2024 in Suva.

ACP Driu indicated that the police have established a collaborative framework with customs, immigration, and fisheries authorities to respond to the challenges posed by drug smuggling. He expressed concern about the increasing number of yachts that may be associated with drug trafficking.

“There are numerous yachts arriving that do not follow proper entry procedures. Many of these vessels are stopping in the eastern regions of the Lau group and Vanua Levu, where we are particularly vulnerable,” he explained. “This poses a significant challenge.”

He underscored the necessity for international collaboration and the sharing of intelligence to effectively combat drug trafficking. “While the public has raised questions about our operational methods, I assure you that our focus will remain on maintaining visibility and managing drug-related activities,” ACP Driu added. “Additionally, we are reinforcing our intelligence efforts, not only domestically but also with our regional partners.”
