Three men have been remanded by Suva’s Magistrates Court after facing serious charges related to possession of illicit drugs and assault. The individuals, identified as Lemeki Baleiwai, aged 29, Maciu Jiuta, 27, and Asaeli Susewa, 23, appeared before Resident Magistrate Sufia Hamza to respond to the charges.
Baleiwai is specifically charged with one count of possessing illicit drugs, while Jiuta and Susewa are charged with serious assault. During the court proceedings, the Police Prosecutor informed the court that all necessary disclosures have been provided to the accused, which has been confirmed by the defense.
The incident that led to these charges occurred on November 18, 2024, when Baleiwai was found with marijuana, and Jiuta and Susewa allegedly assaulted two police officers during the raid. The case has been scheduled for a bail hearing and further mention in Court four on November 29.
This case underlines the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing drug-related offenses and violence in the community. While the circumstances are serious, the judicial process allows for the defendants to present their case and for the law to take its course, reflecting the principle of justice being served. It is hopeful that these legal proceedings will contribute to a safer environment and deter future criminal activities.
