Threatened Over Video: Fiji Family Faces Backlash

The Fiji Police Force has taken action against individuals who allegedly threatened the Verma family after their son, Bhavik Verma, posted a video of a security guard, Iliesa Toga, involved in a recent car accident. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, confirmed that the police received reports of threats made to the Verma family through phone calls and text messages.

Following the video’s circulation, which showcased Mr. Toga taking accountability for the accident while being unknowingly recorded, he gained considerable support within the community, while the Verma family faced backlash. ACPO Driu stated that the police have successfully contacted those who made the threats and investigations are ongoing.

Sanjay Verma, Bhavik’s father, expressed his worries about the safety of his family in light of the distressing communications they received and has requested increased police presence in their neighborhood in Suva.

Interestingly, despite the challenges faced by the Verma family, the video has generated overwhelming support for Mr. Toga, with many Fijians, both domestically and internationally, viewing it as a “blessing in disguise.” Since the video’s release, Mr. Toga has received over FJD$3,300 in M-PAiSA transfers as a demonstration of support from the community. Mr. Toga, however, has implored the public to refrain from hostility towards the Verma family.
