The Cane Price Dilemma: What’s in Store for Farmers?

There is no assurance that the price of cane will stay the same.

However, the Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh stated that if the price of cane were to decrease, there would be provisions in the new financial year 2024 to 2025 for a minimum guaranteed price.

“The cost of cane will either remain stable or increase, but if it decreases, there is funding in the new budget for a minimum guaranteed price,” Mr. Singh said.

He informed farmers in the Bucaisau sector that the price of cane had been favorable for the past 18 months.

“Last year, farmers were receiving $91.38 per tonne,” Mr. Singh said.

“This year, we will be paying farmers $101.80, with some receiving around $103, the highest payment to farmers so far.”

Mr. Singh mentioned that the Government has been providing grants and assistance to farmers to rejuvenate the industry.

“Some farmers accept grants from us but are not genuine,” he said, adding that they would now monitor those who received government grants.

“Please, do not misuse the grant and use it on your land.”

Mr. Singh said more assistance would be provided to farmers in the upcoming financial year.
