During the mid-19th century, Levuka was bustling with activity, attracting missionaries, European traders, and settlers eager to explore new opportunities. It was during this time that four Roman Catholic Marist Fathers arrived on the island, aiming to share their faith and provide education to the local communities. They selected Mission Hill as their central hub for worship and education.
Constructed shortly after the mission’s establishment in 1858, the 199 steps were built by hand using local materials, showcasing the craftsmanship of both the missionaries and the local populace. Luke Tikomaisiga, a 71-year-old resident of Levuka, recalls stories told to him by his ancestors about the steps, noting their significance in representing the daunting journey the missionaries undertook to spread the Gospel.
These steps have become emblematic of Levuka’s unique history. As the original capital of Fiji, Levuka’s significance diminished in 1882 when the capital was relocated to Suva. However, the steps have persisted as a symbol of early Christianity in the region. Locals and visitors alike climb the steps not only to enjoy breathtaking views of the town but also to connect with its storied past.
Market vendor Aloesi Raiviti highlighted the cultural importance of the steps, viewing them as reminders of Levuka’s colonial legacy and its role in spreading the Gospel throughout the Pacific. Over the years, these steps have borne witness to pivotal moments in Levuka’s history, fostering reflection on the town’s roots.
Efforts continue to preserve the steps as part of Levuka’s heritage, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adjacent to the steps are remnants of the original Catholic mission and a historic chapel, further enriching the area’s historical narrative.
