Termite Warfare Begins: A Bold Move to Save Homes in Lautoka!

The termite baiting program for Asian Subterranean Termites was launched yesterday in Lautoka, with the first installation taking place at a house on Lovu Crematorium Road. Sashi Kiran, co-chairperson of the Termite Taskforce, emphasized the importance of starting the baiting process for all 775 homes that received assistance.

Kiran noted that Flick Hygiene won the government tender to carry out the baiting and began the process today for the eligible homes. She stated, “It’s crucial that all homes receiving assistance initiate the baiting to ensure that new timber is protected from termite damage.”

The government is funding these baiting systems, which will be closely monitored by Flick Hygiene through data tracking and biosecurity measures to eliminate any remaining termites. She encouraged residents to bait their entire properties, as colonies live underground and there is a risk of reinfestation without comprehensive treatment.

As a pilot initiative in the Lautoka City area, the government is covering the cost of baiting homes, with plans to extend the program nationwide based on the gathered experience. Efforts are also being made to collaborate with various pest control companies to provide affordable bait options in Fiji.

Kiran highlighted that in regions like Queensland, Australia, all homes are baited regularly, and homeowners are responsible for annual treatment to prevent damage. She mentioned that some properties in Lautoka have seen a decrease in sale prices due to extensive termite damage.

Moving forward, Kiran advised that homeowners must take responsibility for maintaining baiting in their properties. The government will run educational programs to inform citizens about baiting processes, enabling them to purchase bait and apply it regularly. The initial government assistance aims to address a longstanding problem that has caused significant damage.
