The Cabinet has approved the expansion of the termite baiting program, aiming to tackle the widespread issue of termite infestation particularly affecting homes in the Western and Northern Divisions of Fiji. The initiative is supported by funding from the World Bank, specifically targeting households with incomes below $30,000, including those residing in squatter settlements located in vulnerable red zones.
The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji will take charge of overseeing and monitoring the effectiveness of the baiting effort. This program is part of a broader government strategy to eradicate termite infestations and mitigate the damage they cause. Additional comprehensive strategies are expected to be developed for potential future implementations.
The Office of the Prime Minister will lead this initiative in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Biosecurity Authority, ensuring a coordinated approach in addressing the issue. The aggressive pest, known as the African Subterranean termite (AST), has inflicted severe damage on homes for over 15 years, particularly impacting areas like Lautoka, Nadi, and Labasa. There are also reports of infestation in Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki, and Nakasi.
This initiative reflects a proactive stance from the government and international partners to protect residents and promote better living conditions, offering hope to affected families as effective measures are put in place to combat the termite threat.
Overall, the expansion of the termite baiting program exemplifies collective efforts toward sustainable pest management and the improvement of community welfare in Fiji.
