Relations between the United States and China significantly affect the broader Asia-Pacific region, according to Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). He made these remarks while attending the 11th Beijing Xiangshan Forum in China last week, along with Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua.

Major-General Kalouniwai emphasized that the future of Fiji, alongside other Pacific Island nations, is closely linked to the dynamics between the two global superpowers. He pointed out that a positive relationship between the U.S. and China could provide opportunities for peace and prosperity for smaller countries like Fiji. Conversely, rising tensions could pose significant risks, jeopardizing long-term stability and increasing the likelihood of conflict.

The Major-General noted that the economic interdependence of the U.S. and China is apparent and has generally been managed well. However, as China’s influence grows, so do underlying rivalries, leading to concerns about the nature of their future relationship. He posed critical questions regarding the possibility of peaceful coexistence or the drift toward strategic competition.

Kalouniwai indicated that the decisions made in Washington and Beijing in the upcoming months and years will significantly impact peace and conflict outcomes. He highlighted the urgency of U.S. choices regarding China’s rise, as a substantial rivalry could have severe repercussions on global power dynamics.

Furthermore, Major-General Kalouniwai supported Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s concept of a Zone of Peace for the South Pacific. This idea aligns with efforts to promote stability amid geopolitical challenges, emphasizing non-aggression, non-interference, and peaceful dispute resolution. By adhering to these principles, nations in the region can foster dialogue, cooperation, and security, paving the way for lasting peace and prosperity.
