Tensions flared during a bail variation hearing for Daniel Whippy, the managing director of Carpenters Fiji, yesterday. The focal point of the hearing revolved around the possibility of Mr. Whippy undergoing a knee replacement procedure, and whether it could be performed locally or required overseas travel.
Mr. Whippy appeared before Senior Magistrate Sufia Hamza, facing charges of counseling the commission of an offense. Prosecutor Sera Fatafehi reiterated FICAC’s firm opposition to the proposed variation, as it involved Mr. Whippy traveling abroad for his medical treatment.
During the proceedings, Magistrate Hamza inquired about the availability of local medical options. Although a doctor was familiar with the necessary procedure, he was not present to provide his insights. An assessment from a doctor at Nasese private hospital indicated that while Mr. Whippy required a knee replacement, the procedure was not deemed urgent.
Defense attorney Suruj Sharma advocated for his client, urging both the court and prosecution to take into account the significant pain and daily suffering Mr. Whippy experiences. The seriousness of the situation was emphasized by Sharma’s statements about Mr. Whippy’s condition.
In separate but related proceedings, Mr. Whippy is co-accused with former National Fire Authority CEO John O’Connor, who faces charges of abuse of office. Both are implicated in altering the findings of an investigation related to an MH warehouse fire that occurred in April 2018. Mr. O’Connor allegedly instructed NFA officers to modify the investigation report “for purposes of gain,” while Mr. Whippy is accused of counseling this action.
The case has been scheduled for further development, with the next court sessions set for October 31 and November 6 for the hearing on the bail variation.
Despite the tense atmosphere surrounding the case, there remains hope for Mr. Whippy’s health and treatment options. With advancements in local medical practices, there may be a chance for his condition to improve without the need for overseas intervention. This situation underscores the importance of accessible healthcare and timely support for individuals facing significant health challenges.
