Tenants in Hot Water: $16.7 Million Lease Arrears Threaten Legal Action

The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has issued a crucial reminder to 14,661 tenants regarding their lease arrears, which collectively amount to $16.7 million. The Board is urging these tenants to clear their outstanding payments promptly to prevent potential legal actions.

Isoa Tuwai, the general manager of Estate Services at TLTB, emphasized the necessity of addressing these arrears swiftly. He highlighted that timely payments are essential to facilitate timely distribution of lease payments to landowners. Tuwai reminded tenants of their obligation to pay lease rental and administration fees in advance, due on January 1 and July 1 each year, as outlined in the lease agreements.

The TLTB is committed to collaborating with tenants to reach agreeable solutions but insists that resolving these arrears is crucial to avoid escalated legal measures. Tenants are also encouraged to seek financial support from commercial banks with which TLTB has established prior arrangements.

Moreover, tenants are urged to be proactive and address their outstanding payments quickly to avoid further complications. Failure to settle these dues by November 30, 2024, may result in the announcement of tenants’ names in print media and the commencement of legal proceedings, which could lead to the cancellation of leases and loss of property.
