Ten-Year-Old’s Incredible Journey: Battling Cancer with Unbreakable Spirit

After seven years of consistent medical treatment and hospital stays, 10-year-old Autiko Kamaiwaca maintains a resilient and optimistic perspective on life. His mother, Luisa Nauvaci, revealed that Autiko was diagnosed with Wilms Tumor in 2017 at just three years old, while the family was living in Kashmir, Lautoka.

Wilms Tumor, also known as nephroblastoma, is a rare kidney cancer that predominantly affects children, particularly those between the ages of 3 and 4. It is less common in older children and adults.

Luisa recalled a significant moment in 2017 when, after his father showered him, she noticed swelling on the right side of Autiko’s body. Initially, she thought it was minor swelling and did not realize it was the start of a serious illness. The following morning, she took him to the Kamikamica Health Centre, where the doctor referred them to Lautoka Hospital after seeing the swelling.

Despite the referral, Luisa did not suspect the swelling could indicate a serious health issue, as Autiko displayed no other concerning symptoms. Upon arrival at the hospital, he was promptly admitted, and due to the need for scans, he was instructed to go nil by mouth. It was at this point that their regular hospital visits began.

After completing scans, doctors confirmed that one of Autiko’s kidneys was swollen, leading to the diagnosis of cancer. Fortunately, his kidney did not burst. Following the diagnosis, Autiko underwent a comprehensive treatment plan that included injections, blood tests, and chemotherapy.

He completed two months of chemotherapy, experiencing hair loss and weight loss during the process. His grandfather and father supported him during the treatment while his mother was pregnant. Autiko’s CT scans were performed at Colonial War Memorial Hospital, and after undergoing surgery, he continued with check-ups, now functioning with just one kidney.

Luisa reflected on the support from their family, particularly her father, who sold produce at the market to help cover expenses when her husband was unemployed. Despite facing numerous challenges, she expressed gratitude for Autiko’s recovery, emphasizing how the initial swelling allowed for timely medical intervention.

Today, Autiko, now a Year Five student at Loma Primary School, shows no signs of weakness. His mother mentioned that he has continued to thrive, enjoying time with friends and participating in sports. She is thankful for the strength Autiko has exhibited throughout his battle with illness, especially as some of his friends from the WOWS Kids Fiji program have sadly passed away.

Luisa also acknowledged the immense support from WOWS Kids, who provided assistance with food, clothing, and school supplies during difficult times. The family now resides in Narata, along Valley Rd in Sigatoka, and Autiko remains a joyful child who exemplifies resilience in the face of adversity.
