Teen Weightlifting Sensation Strikes Gold at Commonwealth Championship!

Seventeen-year-old Suliano Koro Tuiqalau showcased his remarkable abilities by winning a gold medal in the youth division and a silver medal in the junior division at the 2024 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship held at the Vodafone Arena.

Originating from Wainiyabia Village in Serua, Tuiqalau expressed his appreciation for the chance to compete and represent both his nation and family on an international platform. Initially uncertain about weightlifting, his passion for the sport grew after getting involved in it at school and training with his peers.

“I am not the strongest lifter among the boys on the Fiji team, but after winning the medal, I feel genuinely grateful because I did it for my vanua and my family,” Tuiqalau shared.

He recounted, “After joining weightlifting last year, it was something new, but I am thankful for the experiences I’ve gained. The sport was introduced at my school, and I was encouraged to participate.”

Reflecting on his journey, he noted, “At first, I wasn’t fond of it, but from the moment I entered the gym and started training with my teammates, I became hooked on the sport.”

Despite encountering difficulties during his extensive training for the championship, such as mastering new techniques and enduring demanding sessions, Tuiqalau remained committed to honing his skills and enhancing his performance.

Looking ahead, Tuiqalau is determined to compete in the forthcoming Oceania championships and Minigames. Although he is unsure about his long-term future in weightlifting, he is open to the opportunities that may come his way, recognizing that time will reveal his prospects.
