Teen Weightlifting Sensation Snags Gold and Silver at Commonwealth Championship!

Seventeen-year-old Suliano Koro Tuiqalau showcased his talent by winning a gold medal in the youth category and a silver medal in the junior category at the 2024 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship, which took place at the Vodafone Arena.

Originating from Wainiyabia Village in Serua, Tuiqalau expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to compete and represent his country and family on an international platform. Initially uncertain about the sport, his enthusiasm for weightlifting developed after being introduced to it at school and training alongside his teammates.

“I may not be the strongest lifter among the boys on the Fiji team, but after this achievement, I’m incredibly thankful because I did it for my vanua and family,” Tuiqalau shared. “After competing last year, I decided to pursue weightlifting; it was a new experience, and I’m grateful for what I’ve learned.”

Tuiqalau recounted how weightlifting was introduced at his school and encouraged his participation. “At first, I didn’t enjoy it, but after stepping into the gym and training with my teammates, I became passionate about the sport,” he said.

Despite facing challenges during his intense preparations for the championship, such as mastering new techniques and enduring rigorous training sessions, Tuiqalau remained committed to enhancing his skills and performance. He is now setting his sights on competing in the upcoming Oceania championships and Minigames.

Although uncertain about his long-term future in weightlifting, Tuiqalau is open to whatever opportunities may come his way, understanding that time will reveal what lies ahead. The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship concluded yesterday.
