Seventeen-year-old Suliano Koro Tuiqalau showcased his talent at the 2024 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship, earning a gold medal in the youth category and a silver medal in the junior category at the Vodafone Arena.
Tuiqalau, from Wainiyabia Village in Serua, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete and represent his country and family internationally. He initially had reservations about weightlifting but developed an interest in the sport after being introduced to it at school and training with teammates.
“I may not be the strongest lifter on the Fiji team, but I am very grateful for this medal because I achieved it for my vanua and my family,” Tuiqalau shared. “After competing last year, I began my journey in weightlifting. It was a new experience, and I’m thankful for the opportunities it has brought me.”
He highlighted that weightlifting was introduced to him at school, and despite not liking it at first, the camaraderie and training with his teammates sparked his passion for the sport.
Throughout his preparation for the championship, Tuiqalau faced challenges, including learning new techniques and undergoing intense training, but remained committed to enhancing his skills and performance.
Looking ahead, Tuiqalau is eager to compete in the upcoming Oceania Championships and Minigames. While he is uncertain about his future in weightlifting, he remains optimistic about the opportunities that may arise, recognizing that time will reveal what lies ahead.
