Tebara Festival: A Celebration of Unity and Culture in Nausori

On September 22, 1984, the Tebara Festival was launched with the theme “Tebara embraces all.” The festival commenced in Nausori, featuring a parade led by the Royal Fiji Military Forces Band alongside the LDS Technical College marching band. Hafiz Khan, the Chief Administrator of the Nausori Town Council, officially opened the event.

Highlights of the festival included an inter-faith service that brought together Christian, Hindu, and Islamic communities at Ratu Cakobau Park on September 23. Each evening featured open-air dance performances, with music provided by the Cava Brothers and public judging of contestants at Cakobau Park.

Wednesday was designated as Indian night, showcasing cultural dances such as bhagra, nagra, and kathak, along with an Indian drama and a musical band. The Pacificque night, celebrated by various islander groups, drew significant crowds, including performances by modern dancer Duffy King from the University of the South Pacific.

The Nausori Health Centre organized a baby show aimed at local mothers. The Fiji Times anticipated a large turnout for the float procession on the festival’s final day, which would travel from Visama Rice Mill to Ratu Cakobau Park.

The crowning of Miss Tebara, conducted by Deputy Leader of the Opposition Irene Jai Narayan, was the main highlight of the festival, taking place at 7 PM. Following the festivities, an annual Tebara Ball was scheduled at the Whistling Duck Club, where contestants and attendees enjoyed dinner and dancing to the music of the Cava Brothers.
