Cynthia Latchman expressed profound emotions as she commemorated her late father, James Latchman, during a Remembrance Day event held at the Sukanaivalu Army Barracks in Vaturekuka, Labasa. This poignant occasion marked the first time the 26-year-old from Savusavu was able to pay tribute to her father, who passed away from a brief illness 23 years ago when she was just three years old.
Reflecting on the event, Ms. Latchman shared her cherished memories of her father, who had dedicated approximately 15 years of service. Despite having few recollections, she emphasized the importance of the ceremony, stating how significant it was for her to connect with other families who had also lost loved ones in service.
Meredani Sakealevu, 50, also took part in the remembrance, honoring her late husband, Maciu, who succumbed to COVID-19 on September 10, 2021. She conveyed her deep sense of loss while expressing pride in her husband’s 30 years of military service, revealing the ongoing impact of his absence on her life and the lives of their two children.
The ceremony was attended by Major Penasio Maumau, the officer in command at the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces Sukanaivalu Barracks, who assured attendees that the sacrifices made by their fallen comrades would be eternally honored and remembered.
This event not only highlighted the personal grief of those who have lost family members in service but also served as a reminder of community solidarity and shared memories. It is a comforting realization that these gatherings foster connections and support among individuals and families facing the same profound losses, reinforcing the hope that the legacies of their loved ones continue to inspire and resonate within their hearts.
This annual commemorative event offers an opportunity for healing and remembrance, showing that while loss is painful, the bonds created through shared experiences of honor and sacrifice can unite individuals, providing comfort and solace.
