Cynthia Latchman expressed deep emotion during a heartfelt Remembrance Day ceremony held at the Sukanaivalu Army Barrack in Labasa, honoring her late father, James Latchman. This marked a significant moment for the 26-year-old, as it was her first opportunity to pay tribute to her father, who passed away from a brief illness 23 years ago when she was just three years old.
As the eldest of four siblings, Latchman traveled from Savusavu to partake in the annual event, which brought together families of fallen soldiers. She noted how meaningful it was to share emotional moments with others who have experienced similar losses. “I only have faint memories of him and often wish he were here beside me,” she reflected on her father’s 15 years of military service.
The ceremony also touched the heart of Meredani Sakealevu, age 50, who remembered her late husband, Maciu, who died from coronavirus in 2021. A mother of two from Vunivau, Labasa, she conveyed the emptiness she felt following his unexpected departure, emphasizing her pride in his 30 years of service as a private soldier.
The event was attended by many who sought solace in collective remembrance. Major Penasio Maumau, the officer in command at the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces Sukanaivalu Barracks, reassured attendees that the sacrifices and dedication of these fallen comrades would never be forgotten.
This Remembrance Day not only served as a mourning space for families but also as a powerful reminder of the legacy and bravery of those who have served in the armed forces. The emotional tributes reflect the profound impact that military service has on families and communities.
As the community continues to honor their loved ones, such shared experiences can foster healing and connection among those who have suffered losses, highlighting the resilience of the human spirit in times of grief.
