Cynthia Latchman expressed deep emotions during a poignant Remembrance Day ceremony held in Labasa, where she took the opportunity to honor her late father, James Latchman. It was a moment she had long awaited, as she lost her father to a brief illness 23 years ago when she was just three years old.
The 26-year-old, originally from Savusavu, reflected on the experience, saying she cherishes the memories of her father, who dedicated 15 years to service before his passing. This annual program brought her together with other families of fallen soldiers, allowing her to share in their collective grief and remembrances.
Similarly, Meredani Sakealevu, a 50-year-old resident from Vunivau, Labasa, also felt the weight of loss as she remembered her husband, Maciu, who died due to the coronavirus in September 2021. As a mother of two, she shared that life has been challenging without him, yet she takes pride in his 30 years of military service.
The ceremony at Sukanaivalu Army Barracks was attended by many who lost loved ones in the line of duty. Major Penasio Maumau, officer in command at the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces Sukanaivalu Barracks, reassured the attendees that their sacrifices would never be forgotten, highlighting the enduring legacy of commitment and bravery demonstrated by these fallen soldiers.
This remembrance serves as a powerful reminder of the strong bonds formed through shared sacrifice and the importance of honoring those who have given their lives in service to their country. It showcases the resilience of families as they come together to share their memories and support one another in the face of profound loss.
In a world that often feels disconnected, these gatherings can foster a sense of community and healing, allowing individuals to celebrate the lives of their loved ones while finding strength in shared experiences.
