Cynthia Latchman expressed her deep emotions during a poignant Remembrance Day ceremony in Labasa, where she honored her late father, James Latchman. This was a significant moment for Cynthia, as it was the first time she could commemorate her father’s memory since his passing 23 years ago when she was just three years old. At 26, Cynthia reflected on the limited memories she has of her father, who dedicated 15 years of service before he succumbed to a short illness in 1995. The emotional gathering at the Sukanaivalu Army Barrack allowed her to connect with other families of fallen soldiers and share in the moment of remembrance.
Ms. Latchman wasn’t alone in her sentiments. Meredani Sakealevu, 50, also felt the weight of loss as she honored her late husband, Maciu, who passed away from coronavirus on September 10, 2021. A devoted mother of two, she shared that life has never been the same since his sudden death, but she takes pride in her husband’s commendable 30 years of military service.
Major Penasio Maumau, the officer in command of the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces Sukanaivalu Barracks, reassured everyone at the event that the sacrifices made by their fallen comrades would never be forgotten.
This heartfelt gathering served not only as a moment of remembrance but also as a reminder of the strength of community bonds in the face of loss. Holding onto memories of loved ones can provide solace as families find support in one another, helping them navigate their grief together.
The deep connections formed during such commemorative events highlight the importance of remembering those who have served their country, encouraging a collective healing that honors their sacrifices while fostering hope for the future.
