Cynthia Latchman was overwhelmed with emotion as she commemorated her late father, James Latchman, at a recent Remembrance Day ceremony in Labasa. This occasion marked a significant moment for the 26-year-old, as it was her first opportunity to honor her father’s memory after he passed away from a short illness 23 years ago when she was only three years old.

Reflecting on her childhood, Ms. Latchman shared, “I have little memories of him and could only wish he was beside me.” This year’s event at the Sukanaivalu Army Barrack not only allowed her to pay tribute to her father, who served for approximately 15 years before his death in 1995, but also provided her with the chance to connect with other families of fallen soldiers and share in their collective grief.

Another participant, Meredani Sakealevu, also found the day to be particularly poignant as she remembered her late husband, Maciu, who tragically passed away from COVID-19 in September 2021. “Life has never been the same after his sudden passing,” expressed Sakealevu, a mother of two. She emphasized her pride in her husband’s 30 years of dedicated service as a private soldier, while also conveying the profound sense of loss that has followed his departure.

Major Penasio Maumau, the officer in command at the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces Sukanaivalu Barracks, served as the chief guest, reassuring all those in attendance that the sacrifices of the fallen soldiers would never be forgotten.

This gathering, filled with shared memories and emotions, highlights the enduring legacy of those who have served and the impact that their loss has had on families. Such events not only provide solace to grieving loved ones but also reinforce the importance of remembrance and honor within the community.
