Tears and Tribute: Remembering Our Fallen Heroes in Labasa

Spread the love

Cynthia Latchman found herself overwhelmed with emotion during a poignant Remembrance Day ceremony at the Sukanaivalu Army Barrack in Labasa, as she honored her late father, James Latchman. At just three years old, Cynthia lost her father to a short illness, 23 years ago. Now, at 26, she reflected on the cherished memories of him and expressed her desire for him to have been by her side during this significant moment.

Cynthia, the eldest of four siblings, made the journey from Savusavu to participate in the annual event, wanting to connect with other families of fallen soldiers and share in their collective grief and remembrance.

Similarly, Meredani Sakealevu, 50, was emotional as she remembered her husband, Maciu, who passed away due to coronavirus in September 2021. As she recalled his 30 years of service as a private soldier, she conveyed the profound sense of loss that has enveloped her life since his sudden passing.

Major Penasio Maumau, the officer in command of the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces Sukanaivalu Barracks, delivered a heartfelt message to attendees, reaffirming that the sacrifices of their fallen comrades will forever be honored and remembered.

This gathering serves not only as a day of remembrance but also as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by servicemen and women. As families come together to honor their loved ones, it reinforces the importance of support and community in the healing process. The resilience of these families, alongside their ability to commemorate the lives of those they’ve lost, paints a hopeful picture of enduring love and remembrance in the face of grief.
