Team Fiji’s Olympic Journey: Silver Medals and Heartfelt Farewells in Paris

Team Fiji concluded the 2024 Paris Olympics with a single silver medal, ranking 74th in the overall medal standings. The medal was secured by the Fiji men’s rugby sevens team, which faced a 28-7 defeat against the host nation, France.

Most of the athletes competing for Fiji were under 20 years old, marking their first Olympic experience and expressing pride in representing their nation. They are now focused on improving their performance in hopes of qualifying for the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

In a show of support, members of the Fijian community in Paris hosted Team Fiji for dinner the night before. Linda Acker, Eric Acker, Atonina Lasagavibau, Fero Lasagavibau, and Joe Rokocoko provided a traditional meal and conducted a sevusevu ceremony for the team.

Sale Sorovaki, Team Fiji’s Chef de Mission, expressed gratitude towards the hosts for their hospitality, which made the athletes feel comfortable and welcomed. He noted that the athletes were eager to enjoy Fijian cuisine and spend quality time with fellow Fijians in Paris.

Acker shared her emotional sentiment about hosting the young Olympians, highlighting the honor it was for her. Former All Black Joe Rokocoko remarked that the gathering was significant for Fijians, representing a small but heartfelt gesture of appreciation for these remarkable young athletes now recognized as Olympians.
