The Ministry of Education has reintroduced interviews for Year 13 students who aspire to become teachers. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the quality of teacher recruitment and training in Fiji, developed in collaboration with Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs), the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA), the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS).

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro highlighted the need for a thorough selection process to attract candidates who possess both passion and appropriate qualifications for the teaching profession. This initiative is rooted in the 2024-2033 Denarau Declaration, which aims to strengthen partnerships among stakeholders and the Ministry of Education to ensure that graduates are equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to thrive in classrooms across the nation.

Eligible students are encouraged to apply for scholarships through the Merit-Based Higher Education (Level 7 Local Scheme) and the Minimum Cut-Off Mark Scheme. These scholarships will support various Bachelor of Education programs, including specialized areas like Early Childhood Education, Counselling, and Industrial Arts.

The application deadline for the TSLS scholarships is set for January 31, 2025. Successful candidates will be informed about the dates and locations for their interviews through email or phone notifications.

This initiative is a positive step toward enhancing the caliber of educators in Fiji, ensuring that future teachers are well-prepared to contribute effectively to the education sector. By focusing on quality recruitment and training, the Ministry of Education aims to foster a generation of teachers who can inspire and elevate the learning experience for students nationwide.

Overall, this can be seen as a proactive move to bolster the education system in Fiji and prepare the next wave of educators to meet the demands of future classrooms.
