Members of the Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) have called for Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad to resign due to ongoing pay issues. However, Professor Prasad defends the recent pay increases for civil servants outlined in this year’s budget.
During an annual general meeting of the FTA in Suva, retired politician Ratu Peceli Rinakama expressed his belief that a new Finance Minister should be appointed, claiming that Professor Prasad has failed to address the persistent concerns raised by teachers. Ratu Peceli emphasized the importance of implementing the proposals discussed at the meeting, stating that it would be futile for members to simply return home without action.
While he recognized the government’s democratic election, Ratu Peceli urged members to advocate for their own interests, indicating a desire for a change in leadership.
In response, Professor Prasad stated that Ratu Peceli was misinformed and noted that decisions regarding salaries and job evaluations are within the jurisdiction of the Public Service Commission. He mentioned a positive ongoing dialogue with the FTA and highlighted that the government’s budget decision to increase salaries by 7 to 10 percent for civil servants has generally received approval.
Professor Prasad also indicated that a review might encompass job evaluations, as many existing issues could be alleviated through salary adjustments. He remarked that Ratu Peceli’s comments reflect a misunderstanding of the budgetary measures aimed at elevating civil servant salaries.
He dismissed Ratu Peceli’s personal criticism as unhelpful and reiterated that the government is committed to addressing the longstanding issues faced by teachers, indicating that the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Civil Service play crucial roles in the necessary reforms.
