The Ministry of Education has officially reintroduced interviews for Year 13 students who aspire to enter the teaching profession. This initiative, developed in partnership with Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs), the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA), the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS), is designed to improve the quality of teacher recruitment and training throughout Fiji.
Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro highlighted the significance of a thorough selection process to attract candidates who are not only passionate but also suitably qualified for teaching roles. This initiative is part of the 2024-2033 Denarau Declaration, which seeks to bolster collaboration among various stakeholders within the education sector. The ultimate aim is to ensure that graduates possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to succeed in classrooms across the country.
Eligible students are invited to apply for scholarships under the Merit-Based Higher Education (Level 7 Local Scheme) and the Minimum Cut-Off Mark Scheme. These scholarships fund a variety of Bachelor of Education programs, including specialized fields such as Early Childhood Education, Counseling, and Industrial Arts. The deadline for online applications to the TSLS is set for January 31, 2025, with notifications regarding interview dates and locations being sent to successful candidates via email and phone.
This initiative is a promising step towards enhancing the education system in Fiji by ensuring that future teachers are well-prepared and fully qualified to nurture the next generation of learners. It reflects a commitment to investing in quality education and fostering professional growth within the teaching community.
In summary, the reintroduction of interviews signifies a proactive approach to elevating educational standards and is poised to create a more effective and skilled teaching workforce in Fiji.
