The Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting held yesterday in Tamavua Village, Suva, highlighted the shortage of primary school teachers as a significant issue brought to the attention of the Ministry of Education.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro acknowledged the ongoing challenge of teacher shortages in the province and assured that the ministry is actively working to address it. “The lack of teachers has been a problem for various schools in the province. We recognize this issue and aim to find effective solutions to support these schools,” he stated.

Radrodro indicated that the shortage of primary school teachers is a legacy challenge inherited by the Coalition Government. To combat this, efforts are being made to recruit secondary school teacher graduates who are willing to teach at the primary level.

He also mentioned concerns about the necessity for educators in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. To tackle this, the ministry plans to collaborate with the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board (TSLS) in the upcoming year to enhance the recruitment process for teacher trainees. “We hope to inspire them to join this initiative and graduate in the areas where there is the greatest need,” Radrodro added.

The minister encouraged students in the province to aspire for greater achievements. “Dream beyond the walls of the classroom. Opportunities are always available, so don’t doubt yourself as you work towards your goals. Stay focused and remember to put God first in everything you pursue.”

The meeting served as a platform for discussing these critical educational challenges faced in the Naitasiri region.
