The shortage of primary school teachers was a major topic of discussion at the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting held yesterday in Tamavua Village, Suva.
Education Minister Aseri Radrodro acknowledged the issue and stated that the ministry is actively seeking solutions. “The lack of teachers has been a persistent challenge for various schools in the province. We recognize this problem and are committed to finding effective assistance,” he mentioned.
Radrodro pointed out that the teacher shortage is a legacy issue inherited by the Coalition Government. He added that they are taking initiative to recruit secondary school teacher graduates willing to engage in primary education.
The minister also highlighted concerns regarding the demand for teachers specialized in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. “We are working to tackle this by partnering with the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board (TSLS) in the upcoming calendar year to enhance the recruitment of teacher trainees,” he said.
He expressed optimism about encouraging trainees to specialize in areas where there is a significant need for teachers. Furthermore, Radrodro inspired students in the province to pursue their ambitions without hesitation.
“Dream beyond the confines of the classroom. Opportunities are plentiful, so believe in yourself as you strive to reach your goals. Stay focused on your objectives and always prioritize God in your endeavors,” he urged.
