A taxi driver who was found guilty of raping a Dutch national is set to appear in court today for his sentencing and mitigation hearing. The 33-year-old defendant appeared in the High Court in Suva but found that the matter, presided over by Justice Daniel Goundar, was not in session.

Earlier this month, the accused was convicted of two counts of digital rape, as well as one count each of sexual assault and penile rape. The incidents took place on August 6 of the previous year, involving a 23-year-old complainant who had traveled to Fiji for a voluntary internship with a non-governmental organization (NGO).

The complainant had initially met the accused when he drove her from the airport to her resort. One night, she and her friends invited the accused to join them at the resort bar through her Snapchat account. However, as they walked along the beach, the complainant began to feel uncomfortable in his company. Despite her repeated requests for him to stop his unwanted advances, the accused persisted until he noticed her friend approaching.

During this distressing situation, the accused tried to deflect the seriousness of the encounter, telling the complainant’s friend that she was drunk and should not be believed. Currently, the accused remains in custody while the case has been adjourned until a later date for further proceedings.

This unfortunate incident sheds light on the challenges faced by victims of sexual assault and the importance of support from friends and the community. It is crucial for society to foster a culture where victims feel safe to come forward and where justice is served.

In a proactive response to this case, it is vital for authorities to continue raising awareness about consent and to strengthen support systems for victims of sexual violence. Recognizing the bravery of victims who speak out can also empower others to share their stories and seek justice.
