The open taxi rank system is proving ineffective, according to Land Transport Authority CEO Irimaia Rokosawa. Concerns have been raised regarding the seriousness of the situation and its implications. As a result, discussions are underway to reinstate the taxi base system, which had been abolished three years ago.
Rokosawa noted an increase in private cars operating as illegal taxis, attributing this to insufficient public service vehicles catering to high-demand areas. Labasa Taxi Association president Mahend Prasad echoed these sentiments, highlighting the lack of taxi services in rural areas due to operators working outside of town. He believes this has contributed to traffic congestion in Labasa Town and has called for the urgent removal of the current open rank system.
Savusavu Taxi Association president Mohammed Faruk emphasized that the open rank system is detrimental to taxi drivers’ earnings. He reported that some drivers have experienced a weekly income drop of over $100 since its introduction, leading to a rise in illegal taxi operations. During a public consultation on taxi permit process reviews, he stressed the need for a focus on service.
In Suva, many taxi drivers reportedly refuse short rides for various reasons, creating frustration among passengers. The prevalence of illegal taxi services, known as “pari,” is notable, with many passengers preferring them for their willingness to accept short trips at any time. This raises questions about the legality of operations versus public convenience.
Safety and compensation issues also arise within the taxi sector, presenting additional challenges. The industry must balance the expectations of reliable and well-maintained vehicles with the realities faced by service providers daily. People rely on taxi services for safe transportation, and there is a need for trained drivers who can meet their safety standards.
Finding a balance is essential, as there is a noticeable disconnect between taxi drivers and customers impacted by certain drivers’ attitudes. A reassessment of the taxi service is necessary, focusing on improvements that benefit all parties involved. Engagement in discussions about the future of the taxi industry is a positive step forward.
