In a remarkable display of community vigilance, taxi operators in Suva played a crucial role in the apprehension of a man attempting to steal a vehicle with two young children inside. The incident unfolded last night when a 28-year-old woman, after being involved in a minor accident on Victoria Parade, left her car keys in the ignition while waiting for police assistance. A man exploited this moment, jumping into the driver’s seat and driving away with the woman’s daughters in the backseat.
Quick to respond, the police were alerted, and taxi operators in the Suva area were notified about the stolen vehicle. Utilizing their Radio Transmitters (RT), the information spread quickly through their network. The stolen vehicle was later spotted on Rewa Street, where the suspect made a stop to drop the girls off safely.
A nearby taxi operator acted decisively, intercepting the vehicle and buying crucial time for the police to arrive. However, the suspect resisted arrest and assaulted four police officers during the encounter. Despite his actions, he was taken into custody and further investigations are ongoing.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu commended the taxi operators for their prompt actions. He stated, “These taxi operators assisted the police in apprehending the culprit, demonstrating the power of working together to prevent crime.” In acknowledgment of their effective collaboration with law enforcement, officers from the Totogo Police Station will visit the taxi operators today to express their gratitude for their exceptional support.
This incident not only highlights the importance of community involvement in crime prevention but serves as a testament to the impact of teamwork between the police and the public in maintaining safety and security. It emphasizes that through collaboration, ordinary citizens can play an extraordinary role in protecting their neighborhoods.
