Taxi drivers in Suva played a crucial role in apprehending a man who attempted to steal a vehicle with two young children inside. The incident took place last night after a 28-year-old woman was involved in a minor accident on Victoria Parade. While she waited outside her vehicle for police assistance, she left the keys in the ignition. A man quickly seized the opportunity, jumped into the driver’s seat, and drove off with the woman’s two daughters in the backseat.
Promptly alerted by the victim, the police informed taxi operators in the vicinity about the stolen vehicle. Using their Radio Transmitters (RT), the information was disseminated throughout the network. The stolen vehicle was later identified on Rewa Street, where the suspect stopped to let the two children out.
A taxi operator nearby managed to intercept the vehicle, allowing the police to arrive quickly and arrest the suspect. However, the man resisted arrest and assaulted four police officers during his attempt to flee. Despite this, he was ultimately taken into custody, and investigations are ongoing.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu commended the taxi operators for their swift and effective actions, highlighting the importance of community collaboration in crime prevention. “These taxi operators assisted the police in apprehending the culprit, demonstrating the power of working together to prevent crime,” stated ACP Driu.
In recognition of their promptitude and support, a team from the Totogo Police Station plans to visit the taxi operators today to express gratitude for their invaluable assistance in this situation.
This incident underscores the significance of community vigilance and collaboration in ensuring public safety. The proactive response of the taxi operators not only helped prevent a potential crime but also ensured the safety of the children involved, showcasing the positive impact that dedicated individuals can have in their communities.
