A taxi driver in Labasa claims that his recent call for assistance was overlooked by police officers who arrived at the scene following an assault by two men. Aiyaz Dean Mohammed described the incident, explaining that a private vehicle, suspected of operating illegally as a taxi, obstructed his path before the two men exited the car and attacked him.
Mr. Mohammed stated that instead of receiving medical assistance, he was informed by the police that he would face charges for making an illegal U-turn. He expressed disappointment, saying, “At the very least, they could have addressed my plea first since I was heavily bleeding and then taken me to the hospital. I would have found it acceptable if they had considered my concerns initially.”
As a result of the assault, Mr. Mohammed suffered the loss of two teeth and required hospitalization. Mahend Prasad, president of the Labasa Taxi Association, expressed concern over the lax enforcement of duties among some traffic officers, stating that local cab drivers are now operating in fear following the attack on Mr. Mohammed.
Divisional Police Commander SSP Kemueli Baledrokadroka refrained from commenting on the matter, noting that he was unaware of the situation until Mr. Prasad brought it to his attention. He mentioned that the assault took place on Tuesday, with a report being filed on Friday. However, he confirmed that an investigation is underway, acknowledging that they have received surveillance footage related to the incident. The suspects are believed to be from Suva.
