In a remarkable turn of events on Thursday evening, a taxi driver in Suva found himself at the forefront of a dramatic police pursuit that culminated in the safe rescue of two frightened children, aged just three and four.
The incident began around 8 p.m. on Victoria Parade, outside the ANZ Bank, during a routine police patrol. The driver, who opted to remain anonymous, witnessed three men jump into a car with the two young girls still seated in the back. Without hesitation, he began to chase after the vehicle, hoping to assist in any way possible.
One of the police officers on patrol noticed the driver’s pursuit, leaped into the moving taxi, and together, they followed the stolen car through a series of streets including Toorak and Ami Street, and on to Milverton Road. The driver recounted the tension of the high-speed chase, stating, “We were very fortunate no other vehicles were around at the time or people crossing the road.”
Ultimately, after a desperate attempt to evade capture by the carjacker, the vehicle became trapped in a dead-end street. The suspect attempted to escape by ramming into the taxi but failed when the driver successfully blocked him in, preventing the car from fleeing further.
With the vehicle immobilized, the suspects fled on foot. The taxi driver then discovered the two girls inside, visibly shaken and crying. He soothed them, doing his best to alleviate their fear while waiting for the police to apprehend the suspects.
Reflecting on the night’s events, the driver expressed his gratitude, stating, “I thank God for placing me there at the right time. When we’re able to help, it’s not by accident.”
The entire incident lasted approximately 20 minutes, concluding with the safe return of the children to their family. Police have lauded the driver’s bravery and quick thinking, emphasizing that his actions played a crucial role in preventing a potentially dire situation.
This heroic episode not only highlights the courage of individuals in critical moments but also serves as a reminder of the community’s response in the face of danger.
