A 52-year-old taxi driver from Nakasi has been charged by the Fiji Police Force M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly obtaining financial advantage. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on September 8th of last year, where it is claimed that the driver dishonestly took $100 from a victim via M-Paisa.
According to police investigations, the victim came across a Facebook post advertising car hire services, which prompted them to send a deposit to secure a reservation. Unfortunately, after sending the money, the victim was unable to reach the driver for further communication.
The situation was escalated to the Consumer Council, which subsequently referred the case to the Criminal Investigation Department at the Fiji Police Force Headquarters in Toorak. The taxi driver is currently in police custody and is set to appear before the Nasinu Magistrate Court today.
This incident reflects the ongoing concerns regarding online scams and the importance of being vigilant when making transactions, especially through social media platforms. It serves as a reminder for consumers to exercise caution and verify the legitimacy of services before proceeding with payments.
