Members of the Labasa Taxi Association are urging local authorities and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to take action against illegal operators using private vehicles, often referred to as ‘Pirates.’ The association is also calling on law enforcement to intensify efforts in monitoring the illicit drugs trade.

Sujit Sharma, the association’s secretary, stated that illegal operators are undermining the earnings of legitimate taxi drivers. He pointed out that these rogue taxis typically operate at night to evade LTA and police scrutiny. With the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North currently taking place at Subrail Park in Labasa, the presence of pirate taxis has become particularly noticeable.

Sharma advised potential customers to reconsider using these illegal vehicles, as they do not operate under legitimate fare systems. He emphasized that choosing to ride in illegal taxis poses safety risks and contributes to the perpetuation of this unauthorized industry. The number of pirate taxis has reportedly risen in recent years, coinciding with an increase in the number of personal vehicles owned by individuals.

Regular taxi commuter Reshmi Wati expressed her preference for using licensed taxis for her daily commute. She noted the importance of passenger safety, highlighting that legal taxi drivers are required to adhere to safety regulations, unlike their pirate counterparts.

Sharma also urged the LTA and police to monitor young drivers who may be involved in the illegal drug trade, suggesting that the desire for quick cash can lead them into such activities.
