Heavy rainfall in the Western Division has led to flash flooding in Tavualevu Village, Tavua, forcing 47 families to seek shelter in evacuation centers. Among those affected is 45-year-old Titilia Raibe Tamailebo, who expressed concern over her family’s destroyed farm and the loss of personal belongings. Since Thursday, she and her family have struggled to sleep due to the distress over their flooded properties.

Speaking about the situation, Ms. Tamailebo shared that they started moving essential items and family members to the Tavua District School evacuation center, grateful that she was able to save some appliances like her washing machine and refrigerator. Unfortunately, the Tamailebo house is situated in a low-lying area of the village, making it vulnerable to the rising water levels from the Nasivi River.

Village headman Emosi Vueti noted that flash flooding has become a regular occurrence for the community, especially during periods of heavy rain. He pointed out that the Nasivi River has been affected by sediment buildup from the Vatukoula River, which has made the flooding situation worse. Mr. Vueti has called upon the Government for urgent assistance to excavate the river to prevent further flooding.

In her plea for help, Ms. Tamailebo has requested assistance in the form of mattresses and other essential items lost in the flood, highlighting the immediate needs of those affected.

This situation underscores the importance of community resilience in the face of natural disasters. While the families in Tavualevu Village are currently facing trying times, their collective efforts to adapt and seek help may prompt action from the government and support from humanitarian organizations. With a united approach, there is hope for improvement in their living conditions and proactive measures to mitigate future flooding incidents.
