Taveuni Takes Action: A Bold Step Towards Sustainable Waste Management

The Pacific Recycling Foundation conducted a community consultation today at the Somosomo village hall in Taveuni. The event saw participation from 70 individuals, comprising government representatives, members of the tourism sector, and local stakeholders.

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica officiated the session, which aimed to enhance Taveuni’s waste management plan scheduled for implementation in March 2025. The initiative emphasizes the need for community engagement and sustainable development, as noted by PRF founder Amitesh Deo.

Deo remarked, “This consultation allowed the local community and various stakeholders to share their insights on projects that will directly impact their lives, ensuring they are genuinely part of the decision-making process.”

The waste management plan for Taveuni includes three primary initiatives. The first is a school recycling program at Holy Cross College and Primary School, designed to educate students on effective recycling practices. The second initiative involves a recycling program for hotels and resorts, which will create a central collection point for tourism-related recyclables.

Finally, a community-led cooperative made up of local women and residents will lead the collection of recyclables, aiming to provide environmental benefits as well as economic opportunities for vulnerable groups. Mr. Deo stressed the significance of community participation in shaping the project, and he acknowledged key partners, including Tourism Fiji and the Taveuni Tourism Association, for their support.
