Shamima Ali, coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, emphasized the need for individuals to take a stand against violence toward women, urging communities to become active participants in prevention. In an interview with The Fiji Times, Ali stated that violence in homes can have devastating impacts on lives, and intervention is crucial.

Ali expressed the importance of compassion over indifference, urging people not to dismiss acts of violence as mere news items. “If you know anyone who’s getting beaten up in your household, please intervene,” she urged, highlighting that such actions can prevent family breakdowns and contribute positively to society.

While acknowledging that men also seek help for abuse they face from women, Ali noted that globally, statistics illustrate that patriarchy predominantly results in violence against women, girls, children, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those with disabilities. She remarked that while the instances of men suffering abuse exist, they remain minimal compared to the overall context of gender-based violence.

Ali also highlighted the increase in domestic violence during the COVID-19 pandemic, where reports surged by 300 percent, partly due to the emotional strain and financial hardships experienced by many men. The crisis center responded by establishing support lines and training male advocates to assist those affected.

She brought attention to the serious issue of violence against pregnant women, citing data from the health ministry indicating alarming rates of abuse leading to critical injuries. Recognizing that women are not free from faults, Ali pointed out that the societal structures imposed by patriarchy often restrict women’s ability to respond or retaliate against their aggressors without severe repercussions.

In a hopeful note, the ongoing awareness and intervention efforts aim to foster a more supportive and understanding community environment. As individuals become more equipped and willing to speak out against violence, collective action can lead to meaningful change, promoting safety and respect for all members of the society.

In summary, Shamima Ali calls for active participation and intervention against violence, emphasizing that community involvement can save lives and improve societal well-being.
