The Tailevu under-13 rugby team recently participated in the completed Vodafone National Kaji & Kajiana Championship 2024, showcasing the dedication and passion of young athletes. Team coach Sikeli Senibulu expressed his enthusiasm about their involvement in the tournament and highlighted the rigorous preparations they undertook leading up to the three-day event.
Coaching young players comes with its unique challenges, as Senibulu noted the difficulty of teaching and nurturing talent among children. He shared his approach of connecting with the players on their level to effectively develop their skills. “Personally speaking, it’s a hard task for me as teaching the students is very challenging, and while they are children, I just come down to their level in order to upgrade the talent they have,” he explained.
The team comprised players from both semi-urban and rural areas, which posed a challenge in coordinating practices without violating district boundaries. Senibulu expressed his gratitude to education officers who permitted the students to affiliate with a specific school, allowing the team to work collaboratively.
Reflecting on the competitive pace of the tournament, he reiterated that the players are still children and emphasized the importance of supporting their growth. “We need to scaffold all the knowledge and skills they have, and that is the work of the teachers (coaches) in helping achieve their target,” he asserted.
Senibulu also extended his appreciation to the parents and guardians who supported the team during the tournament, highlighting the community’s involvement in nurturing young talent.
This experience not only allows the children to develop their rugby skills but also fosters teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship, laying a strong foundation for their future endeavors in sports and life.
In summary, the Tailevu U13 rugby team’s journey through the Vodafone National Kaji & Kajiana Championship highlights the dedication of young athletes and their coaches. It underscores the critical role of community support and effective coaching in helping children harness their potential while enjoying the spirit of competition. There is hope that such initiatives continue to thrive, nurturing the next generation of athletes in the sport.
