Tailevu Tackles Kava Excess: A Call for Change

The Tailevu Provincial Council has developed a long-term strategic plan aimed at tackling the issue of excessive kava consumption in the province. Council chairman Rusiate Tudravu highlighted that the habit of drinking grog is a significant challenge facing the province.

Tudravu stated, “The excessive drinking of yaqona is an issue that the provincial council is currently grappling with.” He noted that discussions regarding this issue will be included in their strategic planning sessions.

He pointed out that while Tailevu has ample land resources, many young people in the province are primarily engaged in kava indulgence. “Although we cannot entirely eliminate excessive grog consumption, we are promoting a healthier lifestyle and encouraging individuals to limit their intake for a better quality of life,” Tudravu added.

He emphasized the importance of community self-reliance, stating that villages should seek ways to support local initiatives rather than depending solely on government revenue. “We cannot afford to spend most of our time consuming kava,” he mentioned.

Tudravu’s remarks came in response to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s recent appeal to traditional leaders in Tailevu to monitor kava consumption within their communities. Rabuka pointed out that kava drinking contributes to the ongoing struggle with noncommunicable diseases in Fiji.
