Tackling the Tide: New Strategies Against Drug Trafficking at Sea

Police have enhanced border control, with a particular focus on maritime coverage, to address drug trafficking concerns. This was emphasized by Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu during the World Maritime Day 2024 event in Suva.

Driu mentioned that the Police have established a framework in collaboration with key frontline agencies such as customs, immigration, and fisheries to tackle these challenges. He expressed alarm over the increasing number of yachts potentially associated with drug trafficking.

“There are numerous yachts arriving, many of which do not follow the proper entry channels,” Driu noted. He highlighted that many of these vessels tend to anchor in the eastern part of the Lau group and Vanua Levu, areas that are particularly vulnerable.

He underscored the significance of international collaboration and intelligence sharing in the fight against drug trafficking. “While some members of the public have criticized our operational methods, I assure you that our approach will prioritize visibility and the management of drug traffic,” Driu stated. He added that efforts to strengthen intelligence are ongoing, not just within the country, but also in partnership with regional nations.
