Dr. Balram Pundit, the senior medical superintendent at St Giles Psychiatric Hospital in Suva, expressed concerns about the lack of investment in mental health and well-being in society. Speaking during a panel discussion organized by the Ministry of Health to commemorate World Suicide Prevention Day at St. Pius X Parish Raiwaqa Catholic Church, Dr. Pundit highlighted the urgent need to address the stigma associated with suicide and its preventable nature.

He pointed out that insufficient funding for mental health services and support for individuals who suffer in silence has exacerbated the situation. “It’s not just about monetary support; we need investment in changing behaviors towards this issue,” he stated, emphasizing the necessity of creating the appropriate environment and engaging the right individuals to tackle this pressing concern.

Dr. Pundit underscored the importance of allocating adequate resources to assist youth dealing with mental health challenges, offering them safe platforms for self-expression. Recent data from the Fiji Police Force indicated that there were 63 reported suicide cases from January 1 to August 22 this year, a slight decrease from 66 cases during the same time frame last year. Additionally, there were 44 attempted suicides, a reduction from 47 in the previous year.

Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci described the situation as highly concerning, revealing that among the cases reported, eight suicides and five attempts involved individuals under 18. The most affected age group was individuals over 60, with 19 suicides and two attempts recorded. The statistics also showed a notable gender disparity, with males accounting for 50 of the reported cases.

ACP Raikaci called on community leaders to help reshape the narrative around mental health. “We need to foster a more understanding and supportive culture and create safe spaces for open dialogue,” he urged. In addition to addressing traditional policing issues, he emphasized the importance of tackling cyberbullying and encouraging compassion in the digital realm.

Factors frequently associated with suicide and attempted suicide include marital disputes, family conflicts, relationship difficulties, stress, and health issues.
