Tackling the Dark Side of Social Media in Fiji: A Call for Change

Social media in Fiji has been described as notably harsh, sexist, and damaging, particularly affecting women and LGBTQ+ individuals in the nation. This observation was made by Constitutional Lawyer Jon Apted during a panel discussion aimed at tackling obstacles to female participation in local government elections.

Apted pointed out that it is common for individuals to discover personal images of themselves circulating on social media, especially through platforms like Chat Fiji and related Facebook groups, where trolls often share intimate photos and make allegations about people’s personal lives.

He emphasized that such behavior can deter women from engaging in public life, as the risks associated with social media harassment are significant. While there are existing laws that could hold individuals accountable for harmful online behavior, Apted noted a lack of financial support and staffing for the Online Safety Commission.

He expressed concern that insufficient investment in public awareness regarding online conduct further complicates matters. Apted concluded that to encourage women to feel empowered in the public sphere, these crucial issues must be addressed.
