A student at The University of the South Pacific, who is studying human rights, has expressed deep concern regarding the issue of rising teenage pregnancies in Tonga in a recent assignment. As a citizen of Tonga, the student emphasizes that the increasing number of teenage pregnancies poses serious threats to the health and future of young girls, alongside significant socio-economic challenges for the community.
The student notes that insufficient access to sexual education and reproductive health services has contributed to this alarming trend, leaving many teenagers to make uninformed decisions which can lead to unintended pregnancies. There’s an urgent call for comprehensive sex education programs within schools and community outreach efforts that can provide accurate information and necessary support to teenagers.
Moreover, fostering open dialogue between parents and teenagers about sexual health is deemed essential. By working together, the student believes it is possible to secure a healthier future for the youth. This requires collaboration among the Government, non-governmental organizations, and community leaders to develop and implement effective strategies aimed at reducing teenage pregnancies and supporting those affected.
