Tackling Fiji’s Water Crisis: Government Initiatives Unveiled

The Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, highlighted that water scarcity is a significant concern in the country, stressing the Coalition Government’s commitment to addressing the issue comprehensively. During a speech in Parliament, Tuisawau pointed out that the challenges extend beyond infrastructure and include the impacts of climate change and prolonged dry periods.

The Minister mentioned that the government has implemented various measures to combat these challenges. This includes the introduction of water rationing and structured scheduling programs designed to help communities cope with water shortages.

Moreover, Tuisawau noted the establishment of a free water tank scheme, which has been rolled out to various rural and affected areas, and is still open for additional recipients. This initiative allows residents to store water during shortages. He also mentioned the ongoing construction of temporary cofferdams as another short-term solution. Tuisawau emphasized that these efforts are part of both immediate and long-term strategies being pursued by the government.
